Overview

Drawing inspiration from the legendary stone edifices of the Great Zimbabwe ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this breathtaking region is primarily acclaimed for the magnificent Victoria Falls. An untouched and thrilling safari is on offer, promising an array of wildlife in the pristine wilderness of Hwange and Matobo National Parks. Come. Journey with us on our 6-day Zimbabwean Odyssey.

Setting out from the rumbling majesty and untamed allure of Victoria Falls, we voyage southwards to Zimbabwe’s most expansive wildlife refuge, Hwange National Park. This sanctuary serves as the residence for Africa’s most substantial elephant populations. Relish the game drive experience in our open 4×4 safari vehicles, offering unrivaled immersion into the park’s vibrant wildlife.

Our next stop is the enchanting Matopos National Park, nestled in the southwestern corner of Zimbabwe. The park, also known as Matobo National Park, greets us with a sea of large granite outcrops known as the Matobo Hills. We’ll take our time meandering around the park, basking in the grandeur of the seemingly defying gravity granite boulders and engage in an afternoon game drive.

Next, we chart a course to the ancient ruins of the Royal Palace of Great Zimbabwe. The sheer five-meter-high stone walls, assembled without mortar, represent Sub-Saharan Africa’s most expansive and significant stone ruins – an extraordinary archaeological treasure. Here, we discover the famed soapstone-carved birds, the symbols that proudly adorn Zimbabwe’s national flag. A guided walk through these historical remains grants us insight into a bygone era. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate stone craftsmanship and delve into the heritage of this testament to early Zimbabwean civilization.

As we cross the Limpopo River and make our way into South Africa, we pause for some leisure time in the warm embrace of South Africa’s northern most province, perfectly encapsulating this serene experience before we navigate our way to the glittering city of Johannesburg. Here, our African safari odyssey reaches its grand conclusion.

Day 1 – Victoria Falls to Hwange National Park

This morning we leave the rumble and adventure of Victoria Falls behind us as we make the journey south to Hwange National Park.  Hwange is the largest of Zimbabwe’s national parks and offers excellent opportunities for viewing the diversity of wildlife that calls the park home.

Day 2 – Hwange National Park

Home to the big-5, Hwange National Park also offers a wide variety of plains game and birdlife.  We will spend the day game driving (in open 4×4 vehicles) through Hwange in search of the animals.

Day 3 – Matopos National Park

After breakfast we continue south towards Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe. Our afternoon will be spent exploring the Matopos National Park with a local guide. The park received recognition as a UNESCO natural World Heritage Site in 2003 and includes an intensive protection zone that is home to both Black and White Rhinoceros. Named after the Ndebele word “Matobo “, whose meaning “bald heads” refers to the rounded granite hills that surround it. We return to Bulawayo and our overnight stop for the night.

Day 4 – Great Zimbabwe Ruins

Our journey today takes us to Masvingo and the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. This afternoon we will enjoy a guided walking tour of this historic site. Dating back to the Late Iron Age, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. We take time this afternoon to marvel at the intricate stone work and experience the heritage of this monument to early Zimbabwean civilisation.
